Q: Which essay is more important – the personal statement or the supplement?

A: Great question! They each have equal importance, but in different ways. Think of the personal statement like you would a first date. It’s an initial impression, you’re getting to know someone, you have their full attention and whatever you write about is likely to stay with them for the entire admissions process. This essay is the one that your advocates on the admissions committee will talk about when they make the case for you. Think of the supplement like you would a second date. “We liked you enough to see you again.” The supplement is the chance to really showcase who you are, what field you want to study, and what kind of contribution you will make on campus. To accomplish this: know your field, know the school, and express that in the essays.
