Individual College Supplement Essays
The individual college supplement essays present the applicant with a completely different challenge to the Common Application essay. In these essays, applicants are expected to articulate what they want from that college, express an understanding of their major, and communicate effectively what they will bring to the campus and community at large. The supplements aren’t just a venue to itemize their accomplishments. A powerful supplement essay draws a through line from what the applicant has done in high school all the way to what they plan to do in college and beyond. What I bring to this process is an understanding of the schools, their programs, and most importantly, what admissions officers are looking for.
- Via telephone, we brainstorm the school’s supplement essay. This in-depth interview/ brainstorm session is where I help the applicant craft an answer which tells admissions that they know who they are and what they hope to gain from that particular school. Then, I teach the applicant how to create a structure for the essay, which they use to write a first draft.
- After this, we discuss the first draft, identifying ways to make it stronger. Together, we agree to notes which make that supplement more interesting and more insightful.
- Next up is the second review, before turning that draft into a final one.

“My wife and I were never involved in the essays, which is exactly how we wanted it! You’ll definitely be hearing from us next year with our younger daughter.”
